We recommend the following:

* Brush your teeth twice a day with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste.  Replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.  A worn toothbrush won't do a good job of cleaning your teeth.

* Clean between teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.  Tooth decay-causing bacteria still linger between teeth where toothbrush bristles can't reach.  This helps remove the sticky film on teeth called plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.

* Eat a balanced diet and limit between-meal snacks.

* An excellent way to have a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums is to schedule regular dental visits.

February is American Heart Month.  Some research suggests that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke may be linked to oral bacteria, possibly due to chronic inflammation from periodontitis - a severe form of gum disease.  Gum disease may allow bacteria to enter your bloodstream.  If you have a weak immune system or a damaged heart valve, this can cause infection in other parts of the body - such as an infection of the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis).  Please let us know at during your visit if you have had any recent illnesses or a chronic condition.  Also watch for signs and symptoms of oral disease and contact us if a problem arises.

I asked Dr. Errin if ANYTHING could be safely done and she suggested bonding.  I was a little uneasy since I also have sensitive mouth tissue but am thrilled with the results.  No more "Mona Lisa" smiling.

The shading of the bonded teeth is perfect.  No "chicklet" look.  Totally natural.  They are so well done there are no problems with comfort. 

Very impressed with Dr. Errin DePalma's skill and patience.

My grown daughter's comment on seeing me smile were "Wow" (pause) "WOW"

Good oral hygiene at home is essential to help keep periodontal disease from becoming more serious or recurring.  Several warning signs that can signal a problem:

  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Red, swollen, tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste
  • Permanent teeth that is loose or separating
  • Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • Any change in the fit of partial dentures

The good news is you can help prevent periodontal (gum) disease by taking good care of your teeth every day and having regular dental checkups.  Here is how to keep your teeth and gums healthy:

No matter how well, how often, or high tech of a toothbrush you use, you will not be able to thoroughly clean between your teeth.  Between the teeth is the place that most gum disease starts.

Cleaning between the teeth once a day with floss removes plaque from between the teeth, areas where the toothbrush can't reach.  It is essential in preventing periodontal (gum) disease.

Tooth decay is the destruction of the tooth enamel.  It occurs when foods containing carbohydrates (sugars and starches) such as milk, soda, raisins, cakes or candy are frequently left on the teeth.  Bacteria that live in the mouth thrive on these foods, producing acids as a result.  Over a period of time, these acids destroy tooth enamel and cavities form.

My cavity doesn't hurt; do I need to get it filled?

The answer is yes.  The longer you wait to get a cavity filled the larger it will become.  The larger the cavity, the risk for loss of tooth and toothaches could occur.  Depending on the situation a Root Canal may be needed.  The larger the cavity gets the more money it can cost you.  The best advice from Drs. Mike & Errin is to get your cavity filled before it costs you in the long run.
